The Zen Files // Jess from Essentially Jess

After a bit of a Zen Files break, we’re back with the fabulous Jess from Essentially Jess. It’s this gorgeous space that not only makes me really think about life, but also got me started on this series. So let’s see what wonderful things Jess has been kind enough to share.

Please tell us what your blog is about and why you started it.

I started my blog as a way to get my name out there before I published my book. Now it’s just kind of a natural extension to who I am.

I blog about life, faith, family and the all important, Grey’s Anatomy ;)

What does “zen” mean to you?

It’s not a word I would normally use honestly. I’d be more likely to say peace. Peace (or zen) to me is being content with who you are, what you have and where you are going. It’s knowing that even when the world is spinning out of control, you have something that’s holding you steady. For me that’s my faith in God.

What’s something you do just for yourself, that makes you feel whole?

Writing would be the first thing that springs to mind. But that’s rarely just for me, and more about communicating with others. It’s what recharges me though.

I’m also a fan of eating on my own. If I’m stressed or need space, the best fix is having a special meal and enjoying it quietly whilst watching a favourite movie, or reading a book. Not sure why I love it, just do :)

Which 5 people from history would you most like to have dinner with and what do you think the conversation would be about?

Aimee Semple McPherson (the founder of the world’s first Christian and woman run, radio station), Joshua (from the bible-he led the Israelites into Israel when they finally stopped running around the desert), Charles Darwin, any of the Roman Emperor’s from the times when gladiators were the done thing, and Mother Theresa. We’d talk about what inspired them, and why they walked the roads they did.

Is there a particular colour that lifts your spirits?

I love red. So vibrant and alive.

I have so many wonderful blog favourites that make me smile, what are the 3 that brighten your day, plus one that we may not have heard of before?

Oh that’s a hard one!

Love Twitchy Corner, cause I love Twitchy  :)

One Of My Own is also a favourite, and I would dearly love to have a cup of tea with Wendy one day.

Can’t go past The Bumpiest Path, for so many reasons.

A blog you may not have heard of? Jamie, the Very Worst Missionary. That chick is all kinds of irreverently inspirational at once.

The Random Roundup…… just for a bit of fun.

Which do you prefer?

Beach or Country.

Beach. Boatman would be miserable if he couldn’t fish.

Pinterest or Instagram.

Instagram. I can do without Pinterest.

Cheese or Chocolate.

Chocolate hands down. Not a cheese fan at all.

Flats or Heels.

Practically, flats, but who wants practical? I’d wear heels all the time if I could justify it :)

Black & White or Colour Photography.

Cool or Warm Weather.

Having lived in Darwin my whole life, I think I would possibly die in a cool climate, so I’m going with warm.

Fruit or Veggies.

Chocolate. With fruit. ;)

Early Nights or Night Owl.

Somewhere in between?

Tv or Radio.

Comedy or Drama.

Comedy. Unless it’s Grey’s :)
