The Crafty Expat is one of those blogs that doesn’t shout out “here I am, read ME!!”. Rather, it’s a cosy little space that feels like home when you arrive. I found Rita’s lovely blog a little while ago, and can always count on some good craft, delicious home cooking, and just a comfortable kick-off-your-shoes feeling, that makes you happy to browse for a while.
Rita has invited us to be a little nosey and step into her world today…..enjoy!
Please tell us what your blog is about and why you started it.
My blog is a platform where I share my thoughts about different subjects I am passionate about such
as living in a different country than your home country, relationships, travelling, etc. But it’s also a
place where I share about my different hobbies which are knitting, crafting, cooking and writing.
I started The Crafty Expat back in May 2011. I had completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism
and I had been looking for work for months and couldn’t find anything. I started to get very angry
about the whole situation. I also felt isolated. I had only a few friends in Melbourne and I missed
my friends back in Montreal and my family. I needed something to connect with others and also
to be able to continue practicing my English writing and all the other things I had learn in my Post-
Graduate. I thought I give blogging a try and I absolutely loved it!
What does “zen” mean to you?
Zen is a moment of peace and quiet. A moment when, even though I know I have problems I have to
deal with, I can feel happiness inside; a moment when, even though life is hectic and stressful, I can
feel faith, hope and calm in the middle of the craziness.
What is the one food that you can always count on to make you feel good?
A nice cup of cocoa. This is what my mum use to make us to my brothers and me. Her recipe was
quite easy: only cocoa powder, sugar and water. When I miss home too much or when I feel down,
a cup of cocoa has the magic effect to make me feel better.
What’s something you do just for yourself, that makes you feel whole?
Writing. When I sit down in front of my computer and write stories or posts for the blog, I feel this
is exactly what I should do. Even though I constantly fight with the negative voices in my head, I feel
this is exactly the place where I should be.
If time and money were no object, what is something you would do to help others?
I would fight against intolerance. Intolerance leads to violence and hatred. Educating people to be
less judgemental and developing their mind to acceptance and love; that everyone has something to
offer if we give then the chance. I would also spend more time helping refugees and migrants who
are by themselves in a new country. I’m already doing some volunteering work with an organisation
called The Multicultural Women’s Sewing Group which helps migrant women to connect with others
and learn English by teaching them how to sew. But, there are lot of work to do in this area.
I have so many wonderful blog favourites that make me smile, what are the 3 that brighten your
day, plus one that we may not have heard of before?
One that we may not have heard of before?
The Random Roundup…… just for a bit of fun.
Which do you prefer?
Beach or Country.
Definitely Beach! This is one of the things I love most about Australia.
Pinterest or Instagram.
Ah!!! I have to say, I just discovered a new love for Pinterest! There is so much inspiration there for
all kind of things.
Cheese or Chocolate.
Between cheese and dark chocolate, I seriously can’t choose. I love them both equally and dearly!
Flats or Heels.
I have to say heels even though I don’t wear them very often anymore.
Black & White or Colour Photography.
Hmmm… I think I prefer colour photography in general but some pictures are just better in black
and white (this is when I love Instagram!)
Cool or Warm Weather.
Warm, hot weather!
Fruit or Veggies.
Veggies, I don’t really have a sweet tooth.
Early Nights or Night Owl.
Tv or Radio.
Comedy or Drama.
A nice mix of both!
So, if you haven’t visited Rita’s part of the blog world yet, drop over to The Crafty Expat. If you’re lucky, she may even make some of that awesome Pretzel Caramel Chocolate Tart!
